Dear San Diego,
The calendar is a wee bit light this week, but no worries—things will pick up as the weather gets warmer and we move into April.
Festive community events include the 10th Annual Antonia Garra Day in Old Town on Saturday and the HPR Queens Lawn Program on Sunday at the International Cottages.
The 19th Annual Indian Music & Dance Festival continues through Sunday at the JCC. Other music-oriented events include the Meet the Strings: Ferdinand the Bull concerts at the Jacobs Music Center on Saturday and Sunday, Chilean-Canadian singer Beto Cuevas performing at the Magnolia on Saturday, Taiko group Drum Tao at Poway OnStage on Sunday, and the Sabrosas Latin Orchestra at the Belly Up on Wednesday.
The San Diego Arab Film Festival gets underway at the Museum of Photographic Arts tonight (Friday) and will screen films this weekend, with more in mid-April. Tonight at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center, there will be a celebration of Mexican filmmaker Juan López Moctezuma. And on Wednesday at the Coronado Library, they will screen and discuss the film The Visitor.
Local theatrical productions include the musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 (ends Sunday) at Theatre for Young Professionals, the opera Carmen, which will be performed throughout this weekend at the Civic Theatre, and, at the Mission Valley Library, La Jolla Playhouse's Colorín, Colorado, a play for 3rd- to 6th-graders. Next Saturday Fences gets underway at the Old Globe.
Author events include two book talks at Warwick's: Jenelle Kim discussing her book The Korean Art of Living Well (Tuesday), and next Thursday's talk by Sheila Grant, who will discuss her spy thriller Passport to Danger.
Other events around town include several options on Saturday, including a talk by Ben Cole on "Acting Shakespeare" at the Mission Valley Library, a show with the comedy ensemble Persians of Interest at National Lampoon: The Yellow Door, and a Nowruz celebration (Persian Nature Day) at the Carlsbad Library. Wrapping up this week's list of events is next Friday's talk at the Museum of Art, A Journey Across the Pacific.
Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!
